Do you know what happens when you walk around the “Chapel on Adam”?
The story of the “Chapel on Adam” begins as early as 1800, when Anton Baier, a local merchant, fell seriously ill with a severe disease of the nose while traveling from Brno. During his illness, he saw in a dream a scene of the glorious Resurrection. After this dream, he resolved to erect on Adam a pillar with an image depicting this scene. He fulfilled his resolve in 1801.
The memorial plaque bears the words: “His faith was fulfilled and he recovered!” Therefore, in 1821 he enclosed this place with a wooden chapel, and in 1847 a stone chapel was built. The chapel is also called the “Nose Chapel”; it was completely renovated in 2000 with significant help from longtime residents and consecrated again. In 2006, a public collection was organized for 20 sandstone steps leading up to the chapel.
The chapel lies directly between two ski slopes in the Sport Area České Petrovice, and it can be visited both on skis and on foot. On the village’s highest hill, it can be seen from far away—especially in the evening, when it is illuminated. It is a prominent landmark of the municipality of České Petrovice.
And do you know what happens if you walk around the chapel while holding your nose? You’ll enjoy a year of good health. And that alone is definitely worth a visit to this chapel!
